Cost Analysis
Owning or leasing and even learning to ride a horse is expensive, but well worth the money you will spend. Please use this cost analysis as an estimate only. Prices vary from the city to the country and from type of care offered. You will need to remember that these are the basic needs to keep you and your horse healthy and happy.
This should include a clean & dry stall and a turnout area. A large pasture with grass is best. Feeding of hay and grain 2x daily and always have fresh clean water. Stalls picked morning & evening with a stall stripping at least once a week.
Partial Board: $300 to $600
This should include a turn out area and a shelter where they will live. Mos likely they will be sharing a space with one or two other horses. They should be feed hay and grain 2x daily and always have fresh water.
Pasture Board: $100 to $200
This will normally only include a large pasture shared with many other horses, with no feeding, but sustaining on the grass alone. There should be a clean water source, a creek or pond. You will need to keep a close eye on your horse and supplement him with feed according to the season & grass situation.
Routine Veterinary Care: $200-$500yr.
This only includes your yearly vaccines and worming. Other situations almost always occur adding to your vet expenses.

Farrier Care: $75 - $250mo
This should consist of four shoes about every four to six weeks. Your horse may only require to have two front shoes. This will depend on what your horse is doing or where you are boarding. Some horses that are enjoying a break in the pasture or are retired only require a trim every 6 to 8 weeks.
